Tour overview

This short outdoor getaway is thoughtfully designed for those seeking to immerse themselves in nature and embark on a deeply relaxing yet active adventure. Dragon Eye Lake, also known locally as Hoa Tien Lake, is a magnificent body of water situated in Ngoi Hoa village, Tan Lac District, Hoa Binh province. Interestingly, this lake is connected underground to the expansive Hoa Binh Reservoir, meaning its water levels fluctuate in tandem. However, while the main reservoir's clarity can vary by season, Dragon Eye Lake famously maintains its pristine, crystal-clear emerald waters year-round. Ngoi Hoa Bay itself is a secluded section of the reservoir, beautifully framed by towering limestone karsts, lush green forests, and the idyllic, untouched villages of the Muong ethnic minority.

Highlights

Itinerary
Day 1: Hanoi – Ngoi Hoa Pier – Ngoi Hoa Bay – Dragon Eye Lake

12:30 Meet your guide at the designated pick-up point and board the transfer vehicle departing for Hoa Binh. Please arrange and enjoy your own lunch prior to departure to ensure you are fully energized for the afternoon's activities.

14:30 Upon arriving at Ngoi Hoa Pier, we will transition to a motorized boat that will transport us toward Dragon Eye Lake. After mooring the boat, we will embark on a gentle 20-minute hike through the surrounding forest to reach the lake. This is a secluded, enclosed body of water completely surrounded by limestone peaks. Depending on the hydrological conditions, the lake's surface area can fluctuate significantly. When the water level drops, striking dead trees emerge from the depths, creating a highly photogenic and surreal landscape often likened to a hidden fairy-tale sanctuary. You will undoubtedly want to spend ample time here capturing the flawless, pristine scenery.

16:30 After swimming and relaxing by the lake, we will hike back to the boat and cruise onward to Ngoi Hoa village. Our accommodation for the night is a rustic, traditional stilt-house homestay that is exceptionally clean and fully equipped with all necessary amenities for your comfort.

18:00 Enjoy a satisfying dinner at the homestay, featuring signature dishes meticulously prepared by the local Muong people. Following the meal, the group will unwind around a crackling campfire, listening to music and enjoying chilled beverages until it is time to rest.

* Included meals: Dinner

* Operational Note: Joined-group tours are scheduled to depart every Saturday afternoon. If you or your group prefer a private tour arrangement, please contact the travel experts at Umove Adventure.

Day 2: Ngoi Hoa – Hanoi

07:30 Enjoy a warm, refreshing breakfast served right at the homestay.

08:30 Begin our SUP paddling expedition to thoroughly explore Ngoi Hoa Bay. This entire 1.5 to 2-hour paddling journey will be closely followed by a motorized escort boat to guarantee your absolute safety. We will paddle gracefully alongside the towering rock walls, venturing deep into the bay. As we navigate further, the waterway naturally narrows, and the limestone cliffs rise dramatically on both sides, creating a spectacularly majestic landscape. Along this route, we will make deliberate stops, allowing you to take photographs and swim freely in the cool, clear waters of the Hoa Binh Reservoir.

11:00 Return to the homestay. You will have plenty of time to shower, pack your belongings, and enjoy a fulfilling lunch.

14:00 Board the motorized boat back to Ngoi Hoa Pier, where our transfer vehicle will be waiting to ensure a smooth drive back to the capital.

16:30 Arrive safely in Hanoi, officially concluding our short but memorable outdoor escape.

* Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch

4. Notes on SUP/kayak paddling and trekking routes:

  • On day 2, we will be in Ngoi Hoa Bay, a quite enclosed bay surrounded by high mountains. The paddling time is about 2 - 2.5 hours. While paddling, we will have an escort motorboat following us.
  • Before starting to paddle, the tour guide will instruct you on how to paddle and provide safety and route notes. You need to wear a life jacket and a leash properly. For first-time SUP paddlers, it is not advisable to stand up on the SUP right from the starting point. After paddling for about 1km - 2km, if you feel comfortable and confident with the water current, you can start standing up to paddle.
  • While paddling on the lake, please pay attention to avoid obstacles such as tree branches, rocks, etc. Paddle close to the shore and watch out for motorboats operating on the lake.
  • If you know how to swim and have a lot of paddling experience, you may take off your life jacket and tie it to the SUP, but you absolutely must not remove the leash.
  • In case of entering Mat Rong (Dragon Eye) Lake, we will trek for about 20-25 minutes along a small mountain trail. The path is not difficult, but it requires wearing sports shoes or sports sandals (flip-flops are not allowed)

5. Homestay:

  • Our homestay is with a Muong ethnic family in Ngoi Hoa village. We will sleep in a traditional stilt house. Each person will have their own mattress, blanket, and mosquito net.

6. Food & Drink:

  • Meals at the homestay are quite diverse and feature many "local characteristics of the Muong ethnic group" such as grilled fish, grilled pork, stir-fried and boiled vegetables... If you have dietary restrictions or are vegetarian, you must inform the UA operator in advance so we can prepare suitable food for you.
  • In case you have special dietary requirements that we cannot accommodate (for health, medical, or religious reasons, etc.), we suggest you prepare and bring your own food.
  • Drinking water will be fully provided on the vehicle and while paddling. Umove Adventure encourages customers to limit the use of single-use plastic and nylon products, so we suggest you bring a reusable water bottle to refill from the large jugs we provide.
  • Alcoholic beverages are not allowed while paddling SUP, kayak, or trekking. Alcoholic beverages and soft drinks are not included in the meals.

7. Joining hands to protect the environment:

  • Umove Adventure supports and applies the principles of Leave No Trace in its outdoor tour programs and activities. We also encourage customers and partners to apply the principles of Leave No Trace when traveling in outdoor environments. View details about Leave No Trace here.

  • If you have cardiovascular disease or musculoskeletal conditions (knee, ankle, shoulder joints, etc.), please consult your doctor before deciding to participate in the trip. The tour guide will carry a basic first-aid kit. If you have any health problems requiring medication, please bring your own medication.
  • In all cases, if you are going into the water to swim, you must wear a life jacket.
