Ky Quan San, also widely known as Bach Moc Luong Tu, rises to 3,046 metres on the border between Sin Suoi Ho in Lai Chau and Sang Ma Sao in Bat Xat, Lao Cai. It is one of Vietnam’s highest mountains and a sought-after objective for experienced trekkers. The route is demanding, combining substantial elevation gain with steep and rugged mountain terrain, but rewards the effort with spectacular highland scenery, dramatic cloud formations and memorable sunrise views.

Itinerary
Night 1: Hanoi – Sapa (Group tour departs every Thurday)

22:00 Meet at the bus office and board the overnight sleeper bus to Sapa. Approximately 45–50 minutes after departure, the bus stops at Noi Bai International Airport to pick up guests who have registered for an airport pick-up.

Day 1: Sapa – Sang Ma Sao - Muoi Peak

05:00 Arrive in Sapa. Get off the bus, stretch and acclimatise to the highland climate. Transfer to the breakfast point, freshen up and leave behind any belongings that are not required during the trek, such as clean clothes for changing after the descent.

07:00 Transfer by vehicle to Ky Quan San Village in Sang Ma Sao, approximately 60km from Sapa. Along the way, enjoy views of dramatic mountain ranges and winding highland roads.

09:00 Arrive at Ky Quan San Village and meet the local H’Mong porter team. Begin the trek to Ky Quan San (Bach Moc Luong Tu).

12:00 Stop along the trail for lunch and a well-earned rest before continuing the afternoon ascent.

17:30 Reach the mountain shelter at approximately 2,100m around sunset. Settle in, organise your belongings and freshen up. Spend the remaining time resting, helping the porter team prepare dinner, or taking a short walk to enjoy the mountain sunset.

18:30 Enjoy dinner and time together around the fire. In clear weather, the remote mountain setting offers an impressive star-filled night sky. Overnight in a wooden mountain shelter.

Day 2: Mountain Hut – Ky Quan San Peak 3046m - Mountain Hut

05:00 Wake up early for breakfast. Enjoy hot coffee or ginger tea before preparing for the summit day.

07:00 Begin the final ascent to the summit. Leave unnecessary belongings at the shelter and carry only essential items. Along the route, pass one of the trek’s best cloud-viewing points at approximately 2,800m.

12:00 Reach the summit of Ky Quan San at 3,046m. Rest, take photos and enjoy the panoramic high-mountain scenery. After lunch on the summit, begin the descent back to the overnight shelter.

17:00 Return to the mountain shelter. Relax, help the porter team prepare dinner, or enjoy another mountain sunset.

18:30 Dinner and overnight at the wooden mountain shelter.

Day 3: Mountain Hut - Sapa - Hanoi

05:00 Wake up early, have breakfast and enjoy the first light over the mountains.

07:30 Enjoy spectacular cloud views from Muoi Mountain, weather permitting.

08:00 Pack your belongings and begin the descent to the original starting point at Ky Quan San Village.

12:45 Stop for a light lunch and rest before transferring back to Sapa.

16:00 Arrive in Sapa and enjoy a traditional Red Dao herbal bath, soaking in warm herbal water to relax after the demanding trek.

19:00 Dinner at a local restaurant featuring Sapa specialities. Celebrate the successful completion of the journey.

23:00 Board the overnight sleeper bus to Hanoi. Expected arrival at My Dinh Bus Station is around 04:30 the following morning. End of tour.

Difficulty of the activity

Difficulty Level (8/10): Good physical skills are a requirement, as well as experience in outdoor activities. This level is not for children. The duration of each trip is from 2  - 4 days with a basic of eating, and sleeping condition. Accommodation is camping. Trekking time might take 5 – 6 hours/day to do the trek with the difficult terrain, slopes, and high elevation. The kayaking and SUP tours might take from 6 – 7 hours/day of paddling.

Suggested physical training: Practice running or kayaking/SUP 2 weeks in advance. Run 2 - 3 times a week, each session 5km. Or paddling from 2- 3 times, each time is 5 - 7 km.

4. Trekking Route Note

  • This is a multi-day trek and one of the more demanding routes among Vietnam’s ten highest mountains. Guests with no previous mountain trekking experience or limited regular exercise should undertake appropriate physical preparation before departure.
  • Umove Adventure recommends carrying a small daypack of approximately 10L with no more than 2kg of essentials such as a wallet, phone and drinking water. Personal overnight belongings, daily water supplies and food for mountain meals are carried by the porter team.

5. Overnight on the Mountain

  • The group spends two nights in a wooden mountain shelter at Muoi Mountain. Toilet and washing facilities are available. Sleeping equipment includes an air mattress or insulated sleeping mat together with a blanket or sleeping bag.

6. Food & Water

  • Dinner on the mountain consists of freshly cooked hot meals prepared by the porter team. Breakfast is typically fried rice, instant noodles or crepes, while lunch is generally pre-prepared cold food.
  • Drinking water is collected from mountain streams and boiled before use. Participants should bring a reusable water bottle for daily refills.
  • Hot tea and coffee are available at the shelter before and after meals.

7. Medical assistance

  • If you have cardiovascular disease or bone and joint diseases (knees, ankles, shoulder joints, etc.), you should consult your doctor before deciding to join the trip. 
  • The tour guide will carry a basic first aid kit. If you have any medical problems that require medication, you should bring your own medication.
Q&A
When is the best time to trek Ky Quan San?

The best period is generally from October to April. October to December is particularly attractive for cloud hunting, while February to April is the main season for wild rhododendrons.

 

Can children join this tour?

Umove Adventure does not generally recommend this tour for children because of its high difficulty level. Children aged over 12 who already have experience on adventure tours may be considered when accompanied by an adult.

 

Can I join if I have no previous trekking experience?

This is a long and demanding route. If you have never trekked in the mountains or do little regular exercise, physical preparation before departure is strongly recommended. Please review Umove Adventure’s preparation guidance for Difficulty Level 8/10.

Can I join as a solo traveller?

Yes. This is a join-in group tour, so solo travellers are welcome. A minimum of 7 participants is required for the tour to operate. If the minimum group size is not reached, Umove Adventure will notify you at least one week before departure so you can transfer to another departure date or receive a refund of your deposit.

How much deposit is required?

A 50% deposit is required when booking, payable by bank transfer or card via OnePay. The remaining 50% must be paid no later than one day before departure. A booking is not confirmed until the deposit has been received.

Can I postpone or cancel before departure?

Yes. A fee may apply depending on how far in advance you postpone or cancel. Changing to another departure date or another tour may also be subject to availability and applicable fees.

Can vegetarian or special dietary requirements be accommodated?

Please inform Umove Adventure of any vegetarian or special dietary requirements before booking. We will check what can be accommodated at the destination and confirm the available options. Vegetarian meals can generally be arranged, although options vary by location.

Is there mobile phone coverage at the overnight shelter?

Mobile phone coverage is generally unavailable in the high-mountain overnight area. Guests should arrange important personal and work communications before beginning the trek.

 

What are the toilet and washing facilities like?

On remote forest sections, basic designated toilet arrangements may be used. At the wooden shelter on Muoi Mountain, toilet and washing facilities are available.
